It is easy to imagine a lot of the benefits of connecting the traditional computer to the manufacturing equipment.
It can be used as an extended Human-Machine Interface, in particular:

visualization of the production process - a large computer screen allows the use of complex graphics and a full palette
of colors, or large numbers, easily visible from a distance,
setting up and managing the work or production parameters - it is also possible to create kits of the parameters
and save them as a ready-made recipes ready for later use,
management of alarms and events (including their history), observation of changes in trends of key process parameters,
creating various reports as files or printouts,
access to a variety of statistics and historical data showing the operation of the device at any time.

This computer may also serve as an interface between the machinery and business management systems, manufacturing and human resources.
The following tasks are often realized by system based on SCADA::
Visualization of production processes, or some production parameters (for example, display of the amount of manufactured
parts or cycle times - see special offer),

acquisition of production parameters, which in conjunction with time, the operator of the machine and in example a serial number
of the product allows to reconstruct the entire history of the product manufacturing
("product tracing" - what, who, when and how) from the collection of raw materials up to shipment of finished goods,
aquisition of data from the test stands, which related to the production data illustrate the processes of quality control,
production management, including arranging crew schedule, generate and determine the order of execution of production, and
automatically setting the parameters of operation of the machinery due to changes in production order,
and much more.

providing customers with on-line information regarding their orders in real time,
and more.

From experience of my customers who have invested in a different scale and functionality SCADA systems I know that:
efficiency of workers has improved significantly, the interval between cycles of machinery operation shortened, machine
downtime disappeared on night shifts, etc.,
effectiveness of the work of inspectors and maintenance staff greatly increased - thanks to the visualization process,
they react to the malfunctions much faster and often do not allow the failure to happen instead of removing it later,
through the possibility of rapid detection of malfunctions production scrap and waste decreased,
quality of products significantly improved, because basing on historical data from production processes
improvements in production technology and machinery park were done,
having an advanced tracking system increases the possibility to gaining new customers which require very good quality of products
and efficient quality control system.
